Sound Choice 1

Published by David Ciaffardini, Sound Choice was one of two publications (OPtion was the other) that were born after the discontinuation of OP. Whenever I interview American hometapers and ask them how they became aware of other hometapers, they nearly always cite OP, Sound Choice and OPtion. I would have preceded posting the inaugural issue of Sound Choice with the first OP, but the initial issues were newspaper size and my scanner won't support that (though I'm determined to work it out). Sound Choice was all about independent music, regardless of style or genre, though lots of experimental music was covered. We've got contacts & sources columns, listings of radio stations friendly to independent music, underground publications, coverage of cassette artists by veteran hometaper Tom Furgas, a detailed interview with John Foster, the former editor of OP, plus loads of band profiles, reviews, and miscellaneous other goodies.

Flowmotion 5

Flowmotion is perhaps best known through the compilation Integrated Circuit Records released with music by Chris & Cosey, Those Little Aliens, Eyeless In Gaza, David Jackman, Ian Boddy, Legendary Pink Dots, Paul Nagle, Carl Matthews and Colin Potter, but it was foremost a fanzine. I have this issue only, and the one they did with Interchange. The line up of the LP gives a good idea about the magazine: experimental and more cosmic synth music. Here in issue articles on Conrad Schnitzler, Konstruktivits, Metamorphosis, Frieder Butzmann, Klaus Schulze, The Final Academy, 23 Skidoo, Z'EV and reviews. No date for this fanzine, but I think around Oh, I couldn't find the LP online (or perhaps I just didn't look very well), so I may it up on No Longer Forgotten Music soon.

Unsound Vol. 1, No. 1

Due to my posting on No Longer Forgotten Music, some people tend to think I know everything, which is hardly true. Sometimes people mail me a snippet of a song, thinking I might know it. Maybe it would be good to have an open end blog for music questions - but hell, I am not going to do that. But sometimes I get nice e-mails too - the majority of course - and one was from Spaceman33 of Aural Innovations Space Rock Radio who is writing a book on the cassette underground and for his research he has access to many magazines and fanzines, which he promised to scan for us. Here is the first. He writes:

Unsound was a mag published in San Francisco by William Davenport, who was also in the band Problemist. I've got 6 issues, and, I believe, there were about 8, published between 1983-86. This is the first issue from September 1983 and features an interview with Perry Webb of Culturcide, an overview of the Los Angeles experimental electronic scene by Brad Laner, and much more. One of the earlier US based publications with any longevity that covered the industrial/noise/punk/experimental underground.

'This is a [publication] for a subterranean culture' is the first line of the editorial, which is hardly a surprise of course, if call it U-bahn, the german word for subway or underground. A small issue this one, with small pieces on Psychic TV, Coup de Grace, Boy Dirt Car, Bondage, Women of the SS and some reviews. The magazine was published by Thorn, who later also created music under the name of Slave State, which I actually never heard. He was from Madison, Wisconsin. In english I should add.

The Other Sound 4

One of the reasons for starting this new blog occured when Thee Brad Miller of Because Told Me To Do It wether I could help him getting some magazines related to John ZeWizz and Coup De Grace for his John ZeWizz Appreciation Society. I did that, who am I to refuse that?, and then I thought it would be nice to have a blog with just old fanzines. But I never know wether I am the right person to scan magazines, or wether they look right on screen, plus it takes so much time to scan one, that I am not too sure how often I can and will post something. The first few posts will of course all deal with John ZeWizz and Coup de Grace. The Other Sound was published by John ZeWizz and this issue has articles on Nurse With Wound, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Industrial Music, Cabaret Voltaire, J.D. Emmanuel, some reviews. I have no idea when this was published, but I think around 1985 or 1986.
